Deep Roots, 2023-
This project emerges from my photographic explorations along the banks of the Upper Delaware River in eastern Pennsylvania, the Third River in New Jersey, and the Gihon River in northern Vermont. These regions and many other ecosystems globally are impacted by warming temperatures, fostering the proliferation of non-native plant species that disrupt the wetland biodiversity of plant and animal communities. Through contiguous image placement and titles that evoke thought, Deep Roots explores the impact of the knotweed plant. Like similar plants, it was initially introduced to North America as a plant known for its beauty and ornamental qualities. While its natural beauty continues, subtle and not-so-subtle change occurs above and beneath the surface.
